We have NaNoWriMo, national novel writing month. Why not a national memoir writing month? Call it NaMemWriMo. It’s ugly, but kind of fun to say. Say it. NaMemWRiMo.
Here’s what I propose: a month, thirty days of writing. Gentle writing. Write twice a day for 10 minutes. Morning, evening. Or morning, then lunch. If possible, same time every day. At the end of the month, you have 60 reflections/memories. Sixty snapshots your life.
Hemingway said writing was easy. He just opened a vein and bled. That’s not this. We’re not Hemingway. Thank God! This is pour a cup of coffee and remember. And smile. This is legacy writing, work worth doing.
We’re doing it because it’s fun. We’re doing it as part of your legacy project. Memoir as photo album, with snapshots of your life.
I’ll provide some structure, 25-30 writing prompts, invitations to write. To write perchance to remember. Memory is a muscle. The more you use it, the more you recall. For example, you are invited to write about your mother. Just ten minutes? For today, yes. If that’s not enough, later in the week or later in the month, you return to your mother and write another ten minutes. You might write about your mother 2-3 times. Another invitation, a disappointment. And marriage, travel, school, children. So many possibilities. Snapshots. Memoir as photo album.
